The Tangled Roots of English

Nicholas Wade

"Armeniaca": This very informative article summarizes some of the latest discoveries in the unending controversy over the origins of Indo-European languages, which includes, indeed, the early history of the Armenian language. As a marginal note, it is sad to point out that the illustration accompanying the article, which was borrowed from the original scholarly study in the journal Language, includes the family tree of Indo-European languages with a mistake that would embarrass any undergraduate student of linguistics. The illustration (p. 199-200 of the article in Language) literally invents a ridiculous name, "Adapazar," to call one of the branches that derived from Classical Armenian. Any number of elementary textbooks on Indo-European linguistics will tell readers that there is no such thing as a branch of the Armenian language called "Adapazar," but one called Western Armenian. The authors assume that Classical Armenian yielded two branches,  Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian, as if they were direct descendents, when, actually, they are branches of Modern Armenian.

Azerbaijan Once Again Spreads Slander at an Official Level

“Azerbaijan once again spreads slander at an official level, trying to make other nations serve for the solution of its own problems,” said Ashot Sargsyan, Head of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religious Affairs of the government staff of the Republic of Mountainous Karabagh, in response to the statement of Mubariz Qurbanli, Chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee on Religious Organizations Affairs, that Armenians have destroyed numerous Muslim, Jewish, Christian and Aghvan (Caucasian Albanian) (*) monuments in the "occupied territories."
"All the monuments in Artsakh have been protected, regardless of their origin or religious affiliation. Unlike Azerbaijan, we preserve and reconstruct antiquities, but we not eliminate them. The mosques of Shushi and Aghdam (Akna) till remain as excellent examples. They are Muslim cultural and spiritual values, and we respect them. Otherwise, why do these mosques still exist?," he said, adding that there have been many examples of Armenian monuments vandalized, as well as graves desecrated and completely destroyed by Azerbaijanis.

The commemoration ceremonies marking the centennial of the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I have been canceled, reported Sunday’s Zaman on February 21, 2015. Sacred Justice

Marian Mesrobian Mac Curdy

For the first six years of my life, my parents, brother and I lived in my maternal grandparents’ house in Syracuse, N.Y. The six of us were crammed into a small early 20th-century frame house, with a front porch and tiny back study that served as my bedroom; an enticingly flat roof outside its window overlooked our grape arbor, fruit trees, and strawberry patch where my grandmother caught the thieving bunny she spanked and sent on its way. Our home welcomed many a visiting dignitary. As a small child I sat on the lap of family friend, Hamo Paraghamian, a huge man with a heart to match. My small hands carried a bowl of yogurt and garlic for General Dro sitting in the blue chair in the corner of our living room, who thanked me by intoning in his gruff voice, “This is food for the gods.”
Aaron Sachaklian (in Armenian, Aharon), my grandfather, spent most of his days in the red leather chair near the wooden radio he listened to every day, silently smoking his Camels with shaking fingers, perhaps from undiagnosed Parkinson’s that would, years later, steal my mother’s smile and cause her shuffling gait. But when I was three, four, five, this quiet man who wore a three-piece suit nearly every day of his life, who had private sessions with visiting community leaders and battle heroes, bounced me on his foreleg, carried me through the doorways on his shoulders like a queen, and took me outside at dusk to survey the peach, pear, and apple trees beyond our back door. When my grandmother Eliza and I made our weekly trip to Abajian Cleaners three blocks down on South Avenue, I was the one to carry his wool coat, hugging it to my chest, saying, “I love my medz-hairig [grandfather]. I wish he would live forever.”

The Turkey-Armenia Protocols: The End

In a statement issued on February 16, 2015, Armenian President Serge Sargsyan said he had asked National Assembly speaker Galust Sahakian to return the protocol to him. This marks the announced end of the protocols brokered by the United States and Russia, with the intermediation of Switzerland, in 2009.
On April 23, 2009, an agreement of “mutual understanding,” defined as a “roadmap,” had been agreed upon by Armenia and Turkey assuring the world that mutually beneficial relations between them were forthcoming.
In the days leading to the signing of the proposals, Sargsyan made a tour of several Armenian communities around the world, including New York, Paris, Beirut, and Los Angeles, only to be met with scorn and outrage.
Public outcry had virtually no swaying influence on the resolve of the Armenian authorities, and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian alongside his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu signed the protocols in Zurich on Oct. 10, 2009.
On April 22, 2010, only seven months after signing the accord, Sargsyan made a statement, in which he made it clear that the political majority in the National Assembly considered statements from the Turkish side unacceptable, “specifically those by Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan, who has again made the ratification of the Armenia-Turkey protocols by the Turkish parliament directly dependent on a resolution over Nagorno-Karabagh.”
In his letter, Sargsyan says that prior to embarking on the process of normalizing Armenia-Turkey relations, the Armenian side had taken into account all possible future developments. The president stressed that just as they were prepared for the regulation of relations via the ratification of the protocols, they were also prepared for their failure. “…We had nothing to hide and it will become clear to the international community, as to who is responsible for the last closed border in Europe…” the letter reads.
“Almost six years have passed since the signing of the Armenia-Turkey protocols. During this entire time, Armenia has always illustrated a consistent position regarding the implementation of the protocols. However, it is necessary to point out the absence of political will by Turkey’s rulers, and the distortion of the spirit and letter of the protocols and the continual discussion of preconditions. Parallel to this, on the cusp of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the policy of denialism and the editing of history has gained more impetus,” Sargsyan’s letter states.
The President said that he has used every opportunity to raise this issue, including from the podium of the United Nations General Assembly in September, 2014 when he made some tough statements about Turkey’s intransigence and unwillingness to ratify the protocols.
“It pains me that Armenia’s entreaties were not heard by the leaders of Turkey. Thereby, I have taken a decision to recall the Armenia-Turkey protocols, signed on October 10, 2009 in Zurich, from the National Assembly.”

In the Wake of Gezi, Taking Stock of Istanbul’s Art Scene

Nevdon Jamgochian

Public art in Turkey’s largest city exploded during the mass uprising of the Gezi Taksim protests, which lasted from May 2013 through September 2014. There are too many examples to do any kind of justice to the breadth of artistic reactions during Gezi, as they ranged from the expected performance pieces to graffiti to a 5,000-book park library to an internet mock-up of the Turkish version of eBay, which listed Gezi Park as an item to bid on. The protests started over the proposed privatization of the beloved little park in Istanbul and exploded into a mass expression of dissatisfaction with the right wing government of Turkey. Gezi was similar to the 15-M and Occupy movements but riskier for the participants, as the violent crackdown by the Turkish government demonstrated.

Vartan Matiossian

The Australian Turkish Advocacy-Alliance (ATAA) is pretty busy these days doing what its American namesake, the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA), does: denying that Armenians were victims of genocide in the Ottoman Empire. To that end, it invited to Australia a rising star of the new generation of non-Turkish revisionists, a Ph.D. student called Tal Buenos, who addressed a group of parliamentarians at the New South Wales Parliament during lunch on November 24, 2014. (There is no such thing as a free lunch, they say, but the luncheon was hosted by the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Turkey, so they ate what they wanted: a warmed-up meal.)

Turkey and the Denial of the Armenian Genocide

Translated by Vartan Matiossian

The genocide of the Armenian people was perpetrated a century ago by the Young Turk government in the Ottoman Empire, from 1915 to 1923. Known also as the "Armenian holocaust," this episode, one of the abominable ones that world history remembers, consisted in the forced deportation and extermination of an undetermined number of Armenian civilians, approximately calculated between a million and a half and two million people.

The Hidden Armenians of Western Armenia

Matthew Karanian (*)

The village of Chunkush was home to about 10,000 Armenians, and hardly anyone else, until 1915.
That’s when the Armenians were driven out, and were marched for two hours to a ravine known as the Dudan Gorge. Once they arrived at the ravine, they were herded by the force of batons and bayonets into its depths. Here they died, if they hadn’t already perished before entering the abyss.
One young Armenian girl, not more than 10 years of age, stood at the edge of death. She was part of a group that had been marched to the ravine on one of the killing days—the day on which her Chunkush neighborhood had been selected for this “deportation.”
