Preventing the Coming U.S. Disaster in the Caucasus

David Boyajian

The United States is risking a disastrous renewal of war in the Caucasus between Armenians and Azeris over the breakaway Armenian-populated Republic of Mountainous Karabagh (RMK, or Artsakh in ancient Armenian).
A new war between Azerbaijan and RMK (with its ally, Armenia) would undoubtedly destroy much of Azerbaijan’s energy industry. This includes key Azeri oil and gas pipelines that lie just a few miles north of RMK and snake through Georgia and Turkey.
Azerbaijan’s economy and corrupt government are massively dependent on oil and gas revenue and would be in deep trouble. The already conflict-ridden Caucasus—recall the Abkhazia stalemate and 2008’s Russian-Georgian war over South Ossetia—would be hopelessly destabilized.  U.S. policy, in particular, would lie in tatters.

From Der Zor to Majdanek: Genocide Trivialized in Scandinavia

Suzanne Khardalian

Two appalling events took place in Scandinavia last week. It all started when the Armenian Genocide Museum and Institute in Yerevan started putting together a small exhibition on Scandinavia and the Armenian Genocide about two years ago. The exhibit began touring the Scandinavian capitals this year, and came to the Danish capital, Copenhagen, about a month ago, where it was set up in a room belonging to the Royal Library (yet located at the University of Copenhagen). The surprise came when the director of the Royal Library, Erland Kolding Nielsen, in his opening speech announced there would be an “alternative” exhibition arranged by the Turkish Embassy, with the announced title, “The so-called Armenian genocide.” What to do? Protest, of course. Indeed, the Royal Library has since garnered heavy criticism from the media and from historians over its decision. Nielsen, however, has denied that the institution buckled under pressure from Turkey.
“We have simply given them the opportunity to show their alternative exhibition,” he said. So, for now, it is business as usual. The exhibition is still scheduled.

A Controversial Genocide

Robert Ellis

The Danish Royal Library has, together with the Armenian embassy, held an exhibition on “The Armenian genocide and the Scandinavian reaction” though due to protests from the Turkish embassy, the library’s director, Erland Kolding Nielsen, has agreed to hold an alternative exhibition titled, “The so-called Armenian genocide.”
This decision has caused widespread debate and 37 Turkish intellectuals, including Taner Akçam, Cengiz Aktar, Murat Belge, Baskın Oran and İpek and Oral Çalışlar, have in an open letter in Denmark’s leading daily Berlingske called on the library’s director to reconsider his decision. In their view, the Turkish government has followed a policy of denial for more than 90 years, culminating in the murder of Hrant Dink in 2007. To allow the Turkish government to arrange an alternative exhibition will only support this policy.

Turning Poison into Medicine: My Journey as Producer of "Three Apples Fell from Heaven"

Sona Tatoyan
I love to walk. I can walk for hours and hours in New York City, my current home. My great-grandmother Lucine loved to walk. In the mid- to late-1950′s, she would walk for miles and miles through Aleppo and into the outskirts with my toddler father on her shoulders.
For the last 25 years I have been carrying Lucine on my shoulders.

The Great Crime that Was Brewing: The Meaning of ‘Medz Yeghern’ before 1915

Vartan Matiossian

We want to believe in the victory of Freedom and of tomorrow’s brotherhood,
we want to enjoy smiles, we want to strengthen our faith
that famine is not eternal, blood is not eternal, yeghern is not eternal.
E. Aknuni (1910)1

The meaning of yeghern in Classical Armenian (“evil,” “crime,” and “calamity”) may seem to give some credence to claims that Medz Yeghern does indeed mean “Great Calamity.” However, before we accept these claims, we must first verify whether those three meanings have survived in Modern Armenian. Their survival is contingent not only on their presence in dictionaries, but also on their actual usagein literature. As translators know firsthand, dictionaries may give definitions, but the key to using them effectively depends on one’s ability to place a given literal definition within its proper context.
In this study, we will first overview the definitions of yeghern in Modern Armenian dictionaries, both monolingual and multilingual, published before and after 1915, to validate the accuracy of the “Great Calamity” translation.

The Exodus of Musa Dagh Armenians: From the Sanjak of Alexandretta to Anjar, Lebanon

Vahram Shemmasian

The Sanjak of Alexandretta/Iskenderun was an autonomous province within Syria during the interwar years. Its inhabitants included a significant number of Armenian natives and refugees, among them the indigenous population of Musa Dagh near Antioch. A political crisis beginning in 1936 shook Sanjak society to its core, as winds of change from a French mandate to Turkish suzerainty increasingly caused panic. The turmoil grew to alarming proportions for the Arabs, Alawites, and Christians when a farcical “election” in the summer of 1938 installed a Turkish majority in the Sanjak’s legislature. A year later Turkey annexed the area. This was the final straw that compelled the overwhelming majority of Armenians, among other groups, to seek refuge in other parts of Syria as well as Lebanon, refusing to live under Turkish rule.

1915: Heroes and Murderers

Orhan Kemal Cengiz

It has been a long time since I first read the book “Cehenneme Övgü, Gündelik Hayatta Totalitarizm” (Prisoners of Ourselves: Totalitarianism in Everyday Life) by Gündüz Vassaf, but I still remember this sentence from it. Whenever I hear the word “hero,” I cannot help but affix “totalitarian” to it.
Vassaf narrates how we escape from freedom via heroes and recreate the order again and again. Heroes are presented to us as men of sacrifice who show courage and no human weakness. They are leaders, military servicemen, religious clerics, revolutionaries, freedom fighters and others.

Armenians Fleeing Anew as Syria Erupts in Battle

Alia Malek

At the newly opened Cilician School in this former Soviet republic, the textbooks are in Arabic, photocopied from a single set flown out of war-torn Syria. The curriculum is Syrian, the flag on the principal’s desk is Syrian, and the teachers and students are all Syrians.
They are also ethnic Armenians, driven by Syria’s civil war to a notional motherland most barely know.

The Evil That We Do Not Know: "Medz Yeghern" and the "Old Language"

Then he stopped and announced, ‘You know, there was on this land a medz yeghern,
a great cataclysm,’ as the survivors called the genocide.
—Aris Janigian (2009)1
The following spring, the Armenian and Turkish ministries announced that they had agreed on a plan of good relations, which allowed President Barack Obama, in his anticipated April 24 address, to refer to the events of 1915 not by the desired designation but by an Armenian alternative: Medz Yeghern, meaning ‘great calamity.’
—Garin Hovannisian (2010)2
If you are not Armenian, you probably know little about the deportations and the massacres:
the death of a million and a half civilians. Meds Yeghern. The Great Catastrophe.
—Chris Bohjalian (2012)3
Above are quotes from Armenian-American fiction and non-fiction writers. These excerpts indicate that “Great Calamity” and similar terms have become a common translation for “Medz Yeghern.” The trend has also been seen in academia, where non-Armenian academics have used the term. Among them is diaspora theorist William Safran, who wrote, “These events took place in the homeland, but they served to mark the ethnonational consciousness in the diaspora as well, especially events of a negative nature, such as…the Armenian yeghern (catastrophe), the Turkish genocide…”4 Of course, the dominant discourse of the Turkish mainstream, be it as “Great Calamity”5 or as “Great Catastrophe,” is seen in books authored or co-authored by Turkish and Turkish-Armenian writers and scholars.6We may assume that the latter either follow the flow or are genuinely convinced that this is the actual translation of the phrase.
However, an internet search may also yield many English-language Armenian outlets that translate Medz Yeghern as “Great Calamity,” or, sometimes, “Great Crime.” There is a duality that makes necessary, after the survey of Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-English vocabularies, to explore their ultimate source: the Armenian language.

Ethereal Aleppo

Antranig Dzarougian
Translated by Jennifer Manoukian

Translator's Note: The following passages are taken from Antranig Dzarougian’s 1980 memoir, Ethereal Aleppo ՚(«Երազային Հալէպը»). One of the foremost writers and editors in the Armenian Diaspora, Dzarougian lived and worked in the Armenian communities of Syria and Lebanon. Born in 1913 in the Ottoman town of Gurin (modern Gürün), Dzarougian was rescued during the massacres and brought to Aleppo, where he was raised in an Armenian orphanage. He is best known for a memoir about that period in his life, People without a Childhood («Մանկութիւն չունեցող մարդիկ»),(*) as well as for his long poem, Letter to Yerevan («Թուղթ առ Երեւան»), and for the various pieces of prose and poetry published in Nayiri, the Aleppo-based, and later Beirut-based, literary journal that he founded and edited.

A Lost Map on the Tramway in Istanbul

Avedis Hadjian

“Who are you? This is Turkey. Do you know what Turkey is?” a man asked me, his thick glasses magnifying the fear in his eyes. He belonged to the little-known Armenian Gypsy community, in the Kurtuluş district of Istanbul. I was at a teahouse where Armenian Gypsy men usually gathered, trying to interview them.
And he was right. I didn’t know what Turkey is. But Turkey, and many Armenians themselves, didn’t know who he was either.

Turkey Pushes Genocide Denial

Ben Cohen

In 1915, when stories of the systematic extermination of the Armenian minority in Anatolia by the Ottoman authorities started to surface in the Western press, Turkish diplomats were rapidly mobilized to deny the reports. “All those who have been killed were of that rebellious element,” the Turkish consul in New York, Djelal Munif Bey, told the New York Times, “who were caught red-handed or while otherwise committing traitorous acts against the Turkish Government, and not women and children, as some of these fabricated reports would have the Americans believe.”

"2012 Declaration": A History of Seized Armenian Properties in Istanbul

Raffi Bedrosyan

After two years of painfully detailed research through thousands of documents, the Hrant Dink Foundation in Istanbul has produced a monumental work on the history and present status of the properties that once belonged to the Armenian charitable foundations in Istanbul—properties that were all seized by the Turkish government during the last few decades. The comprehensive study, some 400 pages long, for the first time compiles a list of the seized properties, illustrating the overall picture and enormity of the plunder suffered by the Armenian schools, orphanages, churches, and hospitals in Istanbul that were dependent on the property income for survival.

A More Actionable Road Map... for Justice to the Armenian Genocide

Shahe Yeni-Komshian

This is a paper/article that describes the components of Armenian national challenges, with a particular focus on a roadmap for a comprehensive resolution to the Armenian Genocide.
Overall this is a piece of synthesis, bringing together different but viable strands of thought and approach, aiming to generate larger coherence in our political thinking.
There is a definite effort to prioritize our challenges; there is emphasis on the necessity to focus on the judicial angle in our fight, and some attempt to identify action plans.
My aim is to initiate public discussion about the topic and also bring these ideas to the widest possible audience. It may hopefully spark and initiate a discussion by thoughtful minds to possibly start a new, serious effort to develop and pursue a realistic road map for the ultimate realization of our national goals.

The Instrumentalization of the "Great Catastrophe"

Vartan Matiossian

It was a pleasant surprise to find out, a few days ago, that our first article, "The Birth of 'Great Calamity: How Medz Yeghern Was Introduced onto the World Stage" (The Armenian Weekly, October 25, 2012, see also elsewhere in this blog), had appeared in French on November 12 on the website of Collectif VAN (Vigilance Armenienne contre le Negationnisme), a non-partisan alliance against Turkish denial actively working in France since 2004 (www.collectifvan.org). Here is the main paragraph of the well-crafted introduction to Tigran Mheryan's translation, signed by the Collectif VAN:

When Dictionaries Are Left Unopened: How ‘Medz Yeghern’ Turned into Terminology of Denial

You may want to know that ‘Meds Yeghern’ does not mean genocide;
it means “Great Calamity.” Armenians used that term before the word
‘genocide’ was coined by Raphael Lemkin in the 1940′s.
–Harut Sassounian1

These explanatory words appeared after President Barack Obama used “Medz Yeghern in his April 2009 statement: “The Meds Yeghern must live on in our memories, just as it lives on in the hearts of the Armenian people. … Nothing can bring back those who were lost in the Meds Yeghern.”2 He repeated Medz Yeghern twice or three times—always without translation—in each of his April 24 statements between 2009 and 2012.
In this article, we will discuss the use of the phrase and some of the reactions it triggered in Armenian and Turkish quarters, and in one of the many realms of public debate: Wikipedia.

That big, hulking statue of the Caucasian strongman in Mexico City has got to go.
Such was the recommendation Friday, November 23, of a special committee appointed to resolve one of the odder controversies to beset this capital. At issue: the city government’s decision to allow Azerbaijan to erect a monument to its late president, Heydar Aliyev, on the iconic Reforma Boulevard, prime real estate in the sprawling megalopolis.

Hidden Truths or Lies

Raffi Bedrosyan

In a matter of years beginning in 1915, an entire people was wiped out from its homeland of several thousand years. But how can you wipe out the remnants—its creations, assets, traces, its very existence—from the collective memory of those who remained in that country, or, for that matter, from the collective memory of the rest of the world? This has been an immense challenge for successive Turkish governments, a mission that was mostly successful for almost four generations. And yet, here and there the lies or the hidden truths kept coming out with increasing frequency, especially in recent years.

Bumping up Against History

Maria Titizian

Autumn in Yerevan this year has been gloriously warm and sunny. Just a few days ago we were sitting at an outdoor café enjoying a hot cup of coffee by Republic Square. I was trying to vacate my mind of everything going on in my life when I happened to glance over and see a big beautiful old tree a few meters away. I had probably walked passed this tree a hundred times but had never taken the time to notice it. I have a weakness for trees without getting too political about them. Many years ago when we were living in Canada there was this magnificent old tree in a vacant lot behind our house. My Italian neighbor and I had promised ourselves that if ever this tree was in danger of being cut down we would go and chain ourselves to it to prevent its destruction. We came home from work one day to see that it was gone and in its place was a large hole and a sign from the city informing us that a church was to be built there. We were naturally upset about it but there wasn’t much we could do, it was gone. In retrospect I now realize that back then I gave up too easily on those issues that meant something to me. Living in Armenia has changed me and I believe or rather hope that I would have, at the very least, sent a letter of protest, albeit late, to city officials if I knew then what I know now…never give up on something of value.

Against Stupidity...

Vartan Matiossian

A friend and colleague from Yerevan brought to our attention a posting in a blog in Russian on Armenian issues, called "Time to Analyze" (the name of the blog is in English). The post, dated January 14, 2012, is entitled "Armenians Who Reached Presidency Outside the Homeland." It introduces five presidents, four of them from Lebanon (Camille Chamoun, Elias Sarkis and Emile Lahoud) and Syria (Emin Hafez); we are only aware that Lahoud is Armenian by his mother, but we have no information about the ethnic origin of the others. However, before reaching their names, we had to cross an incredibly ridiculous first paragraph:

Turkey's Islamist Turn, 10 Years Later

Daniel Pipes
Is Turkey—due to its size, location, economy and sophisticated Islamist ideology—set to become the West's greatest problem in the Middle East?
A tumultuous decade has passed since the Justice and Development Party was first elected to office on Nov. 3, 2002. Almost unnoticed, the country exited the pro-Western era started by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (1881-1938) and entered the anti-Western era of Recep Tayyip Erdogan (born 1954).

Mexico City Journal: Statue of a Foreign Autocrat Sits Uneasily With Some

Elisabeth Malkin

When the mayor inaugurated a pretty little garden fronted by a very large statue at the edge of the central Chapultepec Park last summer, it seemed another step forward in his drive to improve the quality of life in this impossible city.
But a quick check on Google might have spared Mayor Marcelo Ebrard from what happened next.
Speaking off the cuff, the mayor praised the statue’s subject — a complete stranger to many Mexico City residents — as “a great political leader, a statesman.”

Sybarite5: A Night to Remember

Vartan Matiossian

It was a cold night in Manhattan, but the audience filling Zankel Hall was warmed enough to cheerfully welcome Sybarite5 in their Carnegie Hall debut. And for the next two hours, people went from warm to hot while this chamber quintet of young, talented, and passionate musicians was unfolding a cascade of unchained melodies. We have watched and listened to a good share of chamber groups over the years, but nothing was close to the originality and versatility of this one. This writer is neither a musician nor a musical critic, thus these lines are not intended to be a specialist's appreciation of what really transpired on the night of November 13, 2012.

To mark the 125th anniversary of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP), over 200 participants attended an academic conference with 11 prominent historians titled, “Social Democrat Hunchakian Party Throughout History.” The conference, which was hosted by Woodbury University (Burbank, California) on October 27, was organized by the Nor Serount Cultural Association and the Armenian Educational Benevolent Union with co-sponsorship by the Richard G. Hovannisian Endowed Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA (established by the Armenian Educational Foundation), the Armenian Research Center at the University of Michigan, Dearborn; and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR). The academic conference is a part of a series of events to celebrate 125 years of the party’s contributions to the Armenian people, Armenian Cause and struggle.

Who Is Fethullah Gülen?

With the American economy in shambles, Europe imploding, and the Middle East in chaos, convincing Americans that they should pay attention to a Turkish preacher named Fethullah Gülen is an exceedingly hard sell. Many Americans have never heard of him, and if they have, he sounds like the least of their worries. According to his website, he is an “authoritative mainstream Turkish Muslim scholar, thinker, author, poet, opinion leader and educational activist who supports interfaith and intercultural dialogue, science, democracy and spirituality and opposes violence and turning religion into a political ideology.” The website adds that “by some estimates, several hundred educational organizations such as K–12 schools, universities, and language schools have been established around the world inspired by Fethullah Gülen.” The site notes, too, that Gülen was “the first Muslim scholar to publicly condemn the attacks of 9/11.” It also celebrates his modesty.

Winds of Change

Zareh Ouzounian

Many thought this could never happen.
Yet we all WANTED this to happen.
The winds of change are finally blowing in Armenia.
The pre-independence years and the initial following years saw an Armenian people energized by statehood, excited by independence, and full of hope for a better future. And a lot was achieved, including winning a war against all odds. Anyone who had the opportunity of visiting Armenia in those early days of independence will remember that despite very dire economic conditions, there was “something” in the air, there was energy, hope, and excitement.

The Turkish-Made ‘Great Calamity’: How ‘Medz Yeghern’ Became ‘Büyük Felâket’

Vartan Matiossian

The “Metz Yeghern,” which means “Great Evil” in Armenian,
is the name we Armenians use for the genocide.
Robert Attarian (2006)1

The quote comes from a lecture in Italian by the spokesperson for the Consiglio per la comunità armena di Roma (Council of the Armenian Community of Rome) on April 28, 2006. The use of “Medz Yeghern and “genocide” in the same sentence shows it to be part of a conscious goal pursued by Italian Armenians as a way to encourage the adoption of the phrase Medz Yeghern to identify the genocide in languages other than Armenian.
As one example among many, young Italian writer Paolo Cossi in 2007 published a graphic novel titled Medz Yeghern, il grande male (Medz Yeghern: The Great Evil). It was clear that, in his mind, Medz Yeghern was not a euphemism. “I made my first book Medz Yeghern to explain and introduce the Armenian Genocide to the Italian people,” said Cossi recently. “My motivation was a very human motivation in the first place, and it was very important because it is the first genocide of the 20th century. I wanted to create something that can educate the Italian public about genocide because they know very little about it.”2 So far, this graphic novel has been translated into French, Spanish, Dutch, Greek, and Korean.
